Quick & Easy Alfredo

1/2 stick of butter

1 pint of cream

3 cloves of garlic

3/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

salt & pepper to taste

Melt butter in sauce pan. Saute garlic in butter.  Stir in cream.  Heat on low heat stirring constantly.  Stir in cheese.  Continue to stir until slightly thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Top cooked pasta with toppings of your choice. For a vegetarian selection, top with steamed broccoli  or top with grilled chicken for a meat selection. Pour alfredo sauce over the noodles and toppings.

Free Spinning Group at Knit One North

This afternoon was an exiting time with spinners and more spinners.

New Spinning Group forming at Knit One Squirrel Hill

Nora is hosting a new spinning group at the Squirrel Hill store on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Come sit 'n spin with Nora and other spinners this coming Saturday, March 14th from 1 - 3pm.

New Knit One North Knitting Instructor

Knit One North has a new knitting instructor, Heidi. Heidi's Fair Ssle sweater design was published in the Winter '01/'02 issue of Interweave Knits. She will be offering a variety of classes. With one sweater under my belt, I personally am very excited about her Design Your Own Sweater class that she will be offering soon. See the March and April calendars at Knit One North for her class schedule.

Dawne recently completed the Central Park Hoodie but she was not satisfied with the length of her sleeves--they were too long. Heidi gave Dawne a lesson in Steeking. To shorten the sleeves, together they cut off about 5 inches of the sleeve and picked up the stitches so the ribbing can be re-knit.

Yarn & Wine Tasting

Tonight was a fun night at Knit One North in Mars at the Yarn & Wine Tasting.  Brian from Volant Mill Winery talks about his wines.  My favorite was the Volant Red, which is a concord grape wine.  It was absolutely delicious.

Tuesday Afternoon Knitting at Knit One North

The ladies from the Tuesday afternoon knitting group at Knit One North met today to "stitch-n-bitch." Sparkles (Linda) left and Connie right worked on projects from their stash. We all have one--some the size of a LYS, others are just beginning. Sparkles is working on the Palindrome Reversible cable scarf on practice yarn. She has her eye on the Cascade 220 in pink for the 'real thing.' Connie is working on an earflap hat of her own design. She learned to double knit on this project. She demonstrated it to me. It did not seem difficult and I liked the look of the finished product.

Connie (left) is helping Sandy (right) knit her first scarf. Sandy is a lifelong crocheter and only recently took up knitting. Last night she was ready to throw in the towel, but today she got into the groove and knit along easily.

Jude started knitting a round cloth designed by Connie using short rows. She learned to w & t (wrap & turn) with the short rows. Connie teaches a Short Rows class at Knit One North by request. This cloth was knit by Connie and is on display at Knit One North.

Wine and Yarn Tasting at Knit One North

We are thrilled to be sponsoring a yarn and wine tasting with the Volant winery.  It will be on Thursday evening, March 4 from 6:30-8:30 pm at Knit One North.  We will be sampling wines and various new spring and summer yarns like Rowan, Blue Sky Alpaca to name just a few. Superbowl, Socks and a Fish Hat

Wow, what a great Superbowl that was! So how many of you actually could knit during the game?




A week or so ago, some of you may remember that I started my first pair of socks two at a time. I finished them and can really say I loved it. I have been bitten by the sock bug that others have warned me about. Be careful - you could be next. Here is a picture of my Chevvy socks done in Colinette Jitterbug yarn that I found at Knit One in Mars.

I also just finished a hat I found in Ravelry. It is the fish hat and here is the link: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter08/PATTfishy.php. It is a great stashbusting project because you can use any color combinations for your fish so you can use up some of your odds and ends. It was a lot of fun to make and the only thing missing are the eyes which I am planning to make out of felt. Here is mine:

Here is a recipe contributed by Dawne for her White Bean Chili:

1 pound dried navy beans
5 cups chicken stock
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
1 tablespoon minced garlic
3/4 cup diced onion
1 1/2 cups chopped green chiles (fresh or canned)
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, finely chopped
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 to 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
Pinch red pepper flakes
1/2 bunch cilantro leaves, chopped

Directions
Rinse beans well, cover with cool water, and soak for 2 hours. Drain. Place beans in large pot with chicken stock and bring to a boil over high heat. In a saucepan, heat butter over medium heat. Add garlic, onion, and chiles and saute for 5 minutes. Add chile mixture to pot with beans. Add chicken, cumin, oregano, pepper, white pepper, red pepper flakes, and cilantro. Lower heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, for approximately 1 1/2 hours. Serve with cornbread, if desired.

Here is a class I would like to feature from Knit One in Mars. It is a Raglan Toddler Tunic and is being taught by Isobel. This is a baby sweater with no seams and minimal finishing. Two skeins of Cascade 220, and a free pattern were used to create this sweet little raglan tunic, suitable for most two year olds. After knitting the sweater, you will have enough yarn left to knit the matching hat with either a pompom or an I-cord trim finish. If you are interested in taking it, call the Mars store at 724-625-6667.

President Obama & the Pittsburgh Steelers

I found a new group in Ravelry that asked the question "What can one person accomplish in 100 days? " This is based on the President's first 100 days in office. What would you like to accomplish in the next 100 days? Is there something new you want to learn? Unfinished projects that you would like to finish? Please let us know!

As promised from the last blog, here are the pictures of the Girasoles that Jayme, Marybeth and myself made. This pattern is a Jared Flood original.

Jayme's is the one that is the blue/green color. She used Berroco Ultra Alpaca. Mine is the brown one and I too used Berroco Ultra Alpaca. Marybeth did the other two. Her red Girasole is done in Cascade Pastaza (which if you haven't yet tried this yarn, you should!). She also did the yellow one which was done from yarn in her stash.

Good Morning! Great Steeler game yesterday. My hubby wants to go to the game against the Ravens this Sunday but my thought was how much knitting I could get done from home (not to mention being warm). All during the game, I worked on my Girasole by Jared Flood. This is a beautiful blanket that I am making in Berroco Ultra Alpaca which I bought at Knit One North. Jayme is making her blanket in Berroco Ultra Alpaca also. Mary Beth chose to use the yarn recommended by Jared Flood - Cascade Pastaza. Next blog I will get pictures of all of ours to show you.

This recipe for Date Nut Oatmeal Bars is courtesy of Pam from Knit One North's Wednesday group. They are wonderful!
1 3/4 c. oats
3/4 c. flour
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
2 sticks of butter softened

Mix with fingers and pat half of mixture in a 9x13 pan sprayed with Pam.

Cook on stove the following until thick (about 5 minutes)
1 bag chopped dates
1 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water

Spread in pan and then add the other 1/2 of dry mixture. Pat down and bake at 400 for 25 minutes.

This is the second installment of the takeover of the blog by the ladies at the Knit One store in Mars.

Welcome back.

First off, I began making my Christmas stocking a few weeks back with one skein each of red and white Cascade 220 yarn. I got a few inches into my project and decided I would absolutely love a stocking from the Cascade Pastaza. I was ready to tear the stocking out when my brilliant co-manager Dawne suggested turning it into a baby hat. It worked out great. Here is the picture of the baby hat.

I had so much of both skeins left that
when I saw Isobel I asked her if there was something she could do with all of the yarn that was left over. In only a few days she turned out all of these baby hats. She only added a little black Cascade and a little orange Cascade to the original two skeins. Two of these hats are an original Isobel pattern. Can you guess which ones?

This week we received a delivery of some new yarn. We now have Kathmandu Aran yarn in 9 great colors. Along with the yarn came the Queensland Collection and the Queensland Collection Book 5.








Market Squares Bag Knit-Along
We had the kick off last week for the market squares bag. There are a few of us that work at the store that are participating in the knit-along and we know how our progress is going but we want to know how you are doing. Please feel free to stop in the store anytime and update us on how you are doing with your bag. You and your bag might even make the next blog. We also have set aside time every week on Fridays at 1:oo pm and Saturdays at 11:00 am to get together and work on our bags.

Jayme's Swallowtail Shawl Knit-Along
The kickoff for Jayme's swallowtail shawl is today, Thursday, November 20th from 5:00-8:00pm. We will meet weekly every Thursday evening and work on our shawls together. We have had a lot of interest in this shawl and hope that the weather and the Steeler game won't affect our turnout. If you can't make this weeks knit-along group please don't be discouraged. You can start on your own and join us next Thursday!

Charity Knitting Chemo Caps at Knit One North
We will be knitting chemo caps every Sunday from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. We supply the yarn and the pattern, you supply the needles and the willingness. We are collecting caps for the Race for the Cure next year but we will be making donations to cancer centers throughout the area all year long. If you would like to help us in our efforts, join us on Sundays or feel free to knit one at home and bring it in. If you need yarn, let us know and we will be happy to supply some for you.

This weeks recipe:
Butter Spritz Cookies
1 1/2 cups of butter softened
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 cup of sugar
3 1/2 cups of flour
Sprinkles (optional)

Mix butter until creamy. Add vanilla, egg & sugar. Mix well. Add flour slowly & continue to mix. Fill dough in a cookie press. Drop onto cookie sheet 1" apart. Decorate with sprinkles if desired. Bake @ 375 for 10 minutes. Yield 6 dozen.

We are so thrilled to be having Lucy Neatby at our shop in a couple of weeks. I thought I would post the description of her classes for your information.

She will be conducting a six hour workshop each day. On Tuesday her class is on Intarsia and Wednesday will be Scarf Trio, where the class will learn different techniques to make scarves. Scarf Trio - Mirror Mirror, Sea Lettuce or Falling Leaves

6 hours. Intermediate.
Pick one three great scarf patterns designed by Lucy (or sample all three)!
Mirror Mirror uses double-knitting to combine contrasting yarns in a reversible chequerboard pattern;
Falling Leaves is an elegant design based on a repeating texture pattern;
Sea Lettuce uses short-rows to create a stylish ruffled scarf edged with picots.
Over the course of the day, Lucy will guide you through yarn and needle selection for each project and then give instruction in the many and various techniques involved in each and launch you on your chosen project.
Techniques covered will include: I-cord cast-on, elegant increases, Modified Conventional Bind-off, picots, short-rows, working from the right needle to the left (aka knitting-back backwards), Provisional Crochet cast-on, two-colour double knitting and more!

Supply List
These scarves will all work in any weight of yarn.
Bring circular or straight needles in a size to suit your preferred yarn weight. For Mirror Mirror, bring somewhat larger needles in the range 6 - 7mm (US# 10 - 11).
Scissors, crochet hook, blunt darning needles and usual knitting paraphernalia.
Bring yarn for your project (if already chosen) and a small quantity of play yarn to experiment with.

The Cinderella of Knitting Techniques - Intarsia Explored!

6 hour class. Intermediate upwards - some small amount of intarsia experience necessary.
An exploration of intarsia from the basics on up. Whilst working on a sampler swatch we'll explore
pre knitting planning and preparation - the key to serene working. Pattern analysis, identifying easy or challenging intarsia, (to each their own!) and design considerations. Use and simplification of charts.
Preparing a symbol, shade and information card. Low tech hints for yarn management. Tackling tangles. Use of measured lengths of yarn. Bobbins v yarn butterflies.
Getting the first row right. The intarsia join. Knitting backwards. Darning in, tricks and tips. Knitting in ends - in both directions. Awkward shapes and beginning with one stitch. Ragged first stitches - the causes. Handling horizontal colour jumps without needing to plan ahead.
Adding that little extra to your intarsia; blending yarn textures and colours, fancy stitch patterns, stranded knitting, cables, stripes and use of variegated yarns. Surgical replacement of things you don't like!

Supply List

- Darning needles; blunt and semi-sharp; a pair of needles US 5-6 (3.75 - 4mm) Scissors. A bag of part balls of yarn, in six or more colours (preferably wool and wool blends), in mainly DK/Sport (6st per inch) weight. Small amount of fingering / 4 ply weight yarn in two colours. Odds and ends of variegated yarns, mohair scraps. Markers or coloured pencils (optional). Ruler or sticky notes and usual knitting paraphernalia.
Homework -With any of your yarns, cast on 22 sts, knit 3 rows (garter st). Leave 2m/yds of yarn attached to your work.

We had a wonderful time at the Festival and actually everything went without a hitch. Some people were saying that they wished we could have stayed overnight. Marg was kind enough to have brought a video camera with her and actually published it (is this the right term?) on YouTube.

Book Discussion Anyone?

Kathryn Alexander was in town this weekend and she joined us on our trip to Maryland with her dear friend Carol. I begged Carol to let me sit next to Kathryn on the bus to get some knitting tips, but alas, my pleading fell on deaf ears. Kathryn is considered to be one of the top knitting designers and artists in the country. You can see her work in such books as America Knits (link) and Scarf Style (link) to name just a few. We had her kits in the shop and even though they are pricey, they are so exquisite that they sell immediately. She dyes her own yarn in colors that are amazing. As I have said too many times, my photos do not do justice to these works. We will be carrying these kits in the store. This fingerless glove is new for Kathryn and we have a sample for you to see and feel.(Kathryn is in the middle)

I saw this really cool cell phone case that someone was wearing. I recognized the yarn immediately - Tilli Tomas - so of course I had to ask all about it. Charity Knitting & CrochetingWe have charity knitting and crocheting every Sunday from 1:00-4:00pm. We supply the yarn, you supply the needles and the willingness. We are currently knitting and crocheting chemo caps.Unfortunately, there is a large need for these and Knit One is trying to show cancer sufferers that we care.Our caps are donated to those who need them and we need all we can get.We are collecting caps for the Race For The Cure next year but we will also be making donations to cancer centers throughout the area all year long.Please help us in our efforts.If you can't join us on Sundays feel free to knit or crochet one at home and bring in your caps.And if you need yarn just let us know and we will be happy to supply some for you.
Tuesdays Are For Knitting

We currently have a very active group that meets on Tuesdays from 1-5pm. All they ask is you bring your knitting or crocheting and your sense of humor. These ladies love to laugh!
